Frequently Asked Questions

Are those actually painted on the record?

They are! Each piece is hand-painted with white acrylic on the vinyl.

Will the paint peel over time?

According to Wikipedia and the art community, acrylic paint will not crack or yellow. The paint sticks surprisingly well to the vinyl, getting into the grooves. You'd have to scratch it to damage it.

Also, I protect the unframed pieces with a clear coat that you can't see that makes them easier to dust.

What does your note at the bottom of the "Online Gallery" page mean?

Each piece is a hand-painted original, so there will be slight differences. Yours will be unique!

3 of Jimi Hendrix

Also the album I use for your piece might be different.

Can you paint more than one portrait on one record?

KISS

Yes, up to 4 works out well. The faces stay big enough to capture the subject.

I charge $10 more for each additional portrait.

Can I choose the image you use?

I'll give you options, if you'd like to be involved in that step. High-contrast and side-lit photographs work the best, but I can make that special picture work for you.

Can I choose the album you use?

Please do let me know if you have a preference when you order. You can send me an email or call me after you pay and tell me what you'd like. I know certain albums mean more to you than others and I want your piece to capture your passion for the music.

Can I send you an album to use?

Yes! Makes for an even better story. I'll discount the price $10 plus your cost of shipping.

Can you use colored vinyl?

Yep. Even clear colored vinyl.

The Flaming Lips

How do you frame them?

I frame them with the original album sleeve behind in a shiny black aluminum LP frame. Simple, elegant. It's lightweight too because it has plexiglass, but is still sturdy.

Can I buy them unframed?

Yes. For single portraits, it's $100 signed, sealed, and delivered. I protect the painting with a clear coat and send it to you in the original album sleeve. They're easy to hang with a nail through the center hole!

Here is a PayPal "Buy Now" button to use for single portraits. The form will give you an option to enter "who you want" after you've entered your credit card or account information, but before you confirm payment.
If you're uncomfortable with using this form, you can always contact me and we'll work it out. Also, if you want multiple portraits, let me know first. I want you to be happy with the process as well as the final piece.

Can I see them in person?

Yes, if you're near one of the locations selling my work on consignment. Here's the current list:

Wild About Music - 115 East 6th St., Austin, TX 78701
Primitive Kool - 4944 Newport Ave., Ste. A, San Diego, CA 92107
Raw Style - 1511 Montana Ave., Santa Monica, CA 90403
Red Dog Gallery - 812 N. 3rd St. Phoenix, AZ 85004
Roy Robbins - 1030 Swarthmore Ave., Pacific Palisades, CA 90272

Also, if you really want to see one, let me know your location and I'll see if I've sold one to somebody near you who might like sharing their piece with you!

Can I see one being painted?

I've uploaded several videos to my YouTube channel that show the progression of some pieces.

Will you do special commissions?

Definitely. I enjoy connecting with people passionate about music or looking for the perfect unique gift for the music-lover in their family. It's great to have a story to go along with a piece of art.

I can discuss your piece with you via email or phone and then send you a PayPal email invoice, or you can use the buttons below. The PayPal form will give you an option to enter "who you want" after you enter your credit card or account information, but before you confirm payment.
Single Portrait - Framed $175 (plus shipping: $10 domestic/$50 international)
Single Portrait - Unframed $100 (shipping included)
Please do contact me if you're at all uncomfortable with the way PayPal works, or if you want multiple portraits.

We'll figure out how to get you what you want.

How does payment work?

The Buy Now through PayPal buttons take you to a PayPal form that will accept either a credit card or PayPal account. This is the fastest way to complete the transaction. PayPal email invoices work the same way with a link you click on in the email to take you to the PayPal form I've created for you.

I will also accept personal checks and will give out my address on request. I do take payment in advance, so I'll find the record for you and get started on your piece when I receive your check.

How long will it take for me to get mine?

I ask for you to give me about a month. The time depends largely on how long it takes me to find the album to use, but I'll let you know if it will take any longer than 5 weeks.

Do you give discounts if I buy one of each of, say, The Beatles?

The Beatles

Yes. If you want a complete band or the main group members, each on their own record, you'll pay only $150 each. Also, you'll only pay shipping for one. Contact me first and I'll send you a PayPal email invoice.

Will you ship to addresses other than my billing address if I want to give one as a gift?

Certainly! I'll send you an email after you pay to confirm everything. Send me a reply telling me the address where I should send it. Getting to give my work as gifts is one reason I paint these, so I know what joy it brings both to the giver and the givee. (That's not a word, is it?)

Where do you sign them?

I put my chicken-scratch signature on the label.

Will you paint people other than musicians and singers?

If they're related in some way to the recording on the album, then yes.

JFK, Marilyn, and MLK

Will you discount the shipping if I buy more than one?

Yes, you'll only pay for shipping on one. Let me know by phone or email if you want to buy more than one and I'll send you a PayPal email invoice just for you!

Will you ship internationally?

Yes, and the cost is just $40 more for framed pieces.

Can the record still be played?

I love this question! The painted side would sound quite horrible and most likely gunk up the needle, but the other side might still play decently. I try to find records that are already damaged to the point they might be thrown away, so most likely you wouldn't want to risk it anyway.
